Mimi Ditkoff is a muralist and educator who specializes in large-scale public art initiatives and community-driven art projects. Her work is rooted in social transformation and muralism as a tool for collective empowerment. With over seven years of professional experience, Mimi has designed and led dozens of large-scale original murals across New York City, Upstate New York, and Western Massachusetts for schools, nonprofits, businesses, community organizations, and private clients.
She believes that when public art is used as a catalyst for community growth, social change becomes possible. Her mission is to make art more accessible through using community engagement, youth empowerment, and collective storytelling to create murals that spark dialogue, amplify underrepresented voices, challenge perspectives, and invite curiosity.
Mimi’s work is known for its vibrancy, expressive portraiture, and thoughtful attention to compositions that translate collective experiences into visual representation. She uses portraiture as a central storytelling device, focusing on facial expression, gesture, and the relationships between figures and the symbols and spaces around them. Her work has been featured in local and national publications, and her youth arts collective was awarded the 2021 NEFA Public Art for Spatial Justice Grant during her time as lead organizer and co-founder.
Currently working as an independent muralist for hire and as a Teaching Artist with Groundswell Murals in Brooklyn, Mimi brings strong design, technical skill, and a collaborative, professional process to every project, from concept development through final installation. She also accepts commissions for paintings and portrait work.
My Approach
My approach as a muralist is collaborative, research-driven, and community-centered. I believe public art should reflect the people and place it lives in, so every project begins with listening. Through workshops, conversations, youth programming, and stakeholder meetings, I gather stories, ideas, and shared values that shape the foundation of each mural.
For commissioned projects with nonprofits, schools, or businesses, I consult closely with clients and community members to ensure the final design reflects their vision and mission. When working with youth, I guide participants in developing themes, imagery, and visual language—empowering them to contribute directly to a public artwork in their community. The ultimate goal, is to translate shared experiences into vibrant, intentional public artworks that amplify community voices and foster connection.
I manage each stage of the process—from concept development and design to painting and finishing—with professionalism, clear communication, and attention to detail. The result is a thoughtfully crafted mural that strengthens connection, visibility, and pride within the community it serves.
